About Gretta Hazel

Life as a bower bird, a collector of beautiful things, provides a starting point for my rich and robust jewellery collections. Rather than aligning my practice with a particular technique, I enjoy using the method that best fits my intention. I find myself drawn to techniques that are often neglected in contemporary silver-smithing, in particular hand-engraving and filigree. I feel that investing in historical techniques confirms their important place in contemporary jewellery.

Inspiration comes from a cabinet of curiosities, as I draw on forgotten histories to create intimate and playful pieces for every day wear… Vintage lace roller-printed into silver, leaving a permanent impression. Antique keys and coins cast in silver and gold, and set with precious gems. New life breathed into cast-offs, new memories bestowed upon forgotten objects.
